Lighthouses in NC

Lighthouses hold our imaginations of a time when we did not have the technology to communicate like we do now.

 We were on a quest to see the three lighthouses on the south end of the Outer Banks

 Bodie (pronounced body) Lighthouse has
216 steps

 Yes, we climbed them all.  The lighthouse was just opened up to visitors.  This was the third lighthouse at this site.  The first leaned, the second was blown up during the civil war (to prevent the north from using it).  

 Then we traveled to the south to Ocracoke via the Hatteras-Ocracoke ferry.  It is a 40 min trip.

 Ocracoke Lighthouse is the oldest operating lighthouse in NC

 It was a long trip and we were to late to climb it!!  Yes, I did fuss a bit.  But we did get to see it.  Next back in the ferry and I finished my book.  On to Hatteras...

 The Cape Hatteras Lighthouse is the tallest brick lighthouse in North America at 208 feet high.  We, of course, got lost but we got here laughing!

The Lighthouse Board assigned each 

lighthouse a distinctive paint pattern

 (daymark) and light sequence (nightmark) 

to allow mariners to recognize it from all 

others during the day and night as they 

sailed along the coast.
